Uganda

Uganda has a population of 23 million. About 5% of this are pastoralists – comprising about one million people.
They live mainly in western Uganda as well as along the eastern border with Kenya. They are mostly cattle herders. Although Uganda has experience rapid development through the activity
of local and international NGOs in the 1990s which is continuing, this has largely bye passed the pastoralist communities.
Ongoing/Recent Activities
Name of Project: Nkoma Farm – Agricultural Learning Centre
Time frame: June 2003 onwards
Funder: Opengate
The farm has been donated by a local Ugandan farmer on a peppercorn rent.
Geographical Area of Intervention: Western Uganda
Project: The farm is being developed as an agricultural learning centre for pastoralists to help them diversify their agricultural skills.
Additionally, it is intended that it should be available for running workshops and conferences by PENHA and other local bodies.
The Pastoralist Women Group
Name of Project: Women’s Goat Breeding Project
Time frame: une 2003 to May 2005
Funder: Cordaid (the Netherlands)
The farm has been donated by a local Ugandan farmer on a peppercorn rent.
Geographical Area of Intervention: Western Uganda
Project: T PENHA is introducing exotic goats which produce more meat and milk for cross breeding with local goats. The goats in question have been imported from South Africa
and are circulated around pastoralist women’s groups for breeding purposes. The project has included workshops on both how to look after and breed goats as well as basic skills for running a micro business.
Name of Project: Parliamentary Pastoralist Groups
Time frame: September 2003 – November 2004
Funder: DfID via the University of Greenwich

Geographical Area of Intervention: Uganda (also Ethiopia, Kenya)
Project: An assessment of the effectiveness of the pastoralist parliamentary groups in representing pastoralist issues in the three countries in the study.
Previous PENHA Uganda activities:
- Provision of cattle dips for Rwandan refugees in the 1990s.
- African Partnership Workshop (covering the Horn of Africa as a whole, but held in Uganda) Dec 1999
- Several workshops covering natural resource management, gender awareness, basic business skills, etc. were held for delegates from women’s groups, small pastoralist civil society groups, etc. (2000 – 2003).
