Announcing our new Board Chair and Treasurer

I am pleased to announce that the PENHA Board of Trustees elected Dr. Lulsegged Abebe as Board Chair and Dr. Zeremariam Fre as Treasurer, and appointed Mr. Bereket Tsegay as Company Secretary during the AGM held on Monday 10th September 2018.

Dr Zeremariam Fre has been a prominent figure and highly influential academic, civil society leader and development practitioner on pastoralism and environmental management over the past three decades. He has been a passionate and committed spokesperson for marginalised pastoralists in Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somaliland, Sudan and Uganda, facilitating knowledge sharing and cooperation across communities and borders.

NEW BOOK: Knowledge Sovereignty Among African Cattle Herders

PENHA founding director, Dr. Zeremariam Fre has published a book titled as Knowledge Sovereignty Among African Cattle Herders.  The book published by the UCL Press  focuses on the Beni-Amer cattle owners in the western part of the Horn of Africa. As the book explores these herders are not only masters in cattle breeding, they are also knowledge sovereign, in terms of owning productive genes of cattle and the cognitive knowledge base crucial to sustainable development.  

Cyclone Sagar Impact and Needs Assessment Report Published

Recently the Horn of Africa was hit by the Tropical Cyclone Sagar disaster which adversely affected the livelihoods of thousands. 

Rotary Club of Berkhamsted with PENHA Uganda Supports Nomadic Children

Upon the receipt of the grant from the Rotary Club of Berkhamsted, PENHA has been working with the communities and consulting on the priorities they have in using the donated fund. Based on their discussion they agreed to invest the money on the support of the school infrastructure which can bring a long-term contribution to the children around the Kanyaryeru communities.

UNDEF supports Rural Women in Politics Workshop in Hargeisa, Somaliland

PENHA with the support of the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF) has successfully conducted a three-day training of trainers workshop for 30 rural women leaders who are active in campaigns to strengthen women’s participation in politics and are advocates for The Quota from 17th to 19th of July, 2018 in Ambassador Hotel, Hargeisa Somaliland.
