PENHA and Pastoralist and Agro-Pastoralist Women

Since PENHA started work in support of pastoralists and agro-pastoralists in the Horn of Africa, it has recognised that women are the marginalised of the marginalised. In a Consultative Workshop on Gender Issues in the Horn of Africa in Nazareth, Ethiopia in November 1995, coming from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Sudan, Somalia, Uganda as well as Denmark; attending the workshop in our individual capacities and meeting in Nazareth, Ethiopia, the representatives signed a "Declaration on Gender Issues in the Horn of Africa". This has remained a core statement in guiding PENHA's work in the region. The declaration can be downloaded by clicking here as a pdf (53 kb).

PENHA has been part of the Danish Government's "Women in Africa" programme which was initiated in 2006. At a workshop in September 2008 in
Helsingøer, Denmark, PENHA proposed that the "Helsingøer Declaration on Promoting Gender Equality". This was formulated and agreed by the representatives of civil society organizations from Africa, Asia and Europe. The declaration can be downloaded as a pdf by clicking here ( kb).

These Declarations represent a philosophical basis to the work of PENHA amoung the pastoralist and agro-pastoralist women of the Horn of Africa.
