Fighting drought in the Horn of Africa
PENHA is being represented at an important meeting of IGAD, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development by its Country Representative in Somaliland, Sadia Musse Ahmed. This is the Second Drought Resilience Summit which is taking place in Kampala in March.
The meeting follows the decision by the Heads of State meeting in September 2011 to plan ways of ending drought emergencies in the Horn of Africa. This was in response to the latest drought which had taken place in 2010/11 - affecting more than 13 million people and caused famine in parts of the IGAD region. The decision called on the states in the Horn of Africa region to "do things differently". It proposed that states work together on this issue and that development and emergency relief should work together.
