During her October 2016 visit to the UK, PENHA held a reception for Mrs. Shukri Haji Ismail, Somaliland’s Minister of Environment and Rural Development, at the Massawa Restaurant in Archway, with PENHA trustees and staff members, associates, partners and friends. Among the invited guests were Dr. Tekeste Ghebray, former Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Charlie Paton and Abdi Hirsi of Seawater Greenhouse Ltd, Rhoda Ibrahim of Horn Peace Group, Dr. Essam Mohammed of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), and representatives of University College London (UCL) and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of the University of London.
Mrs. Ismail is a long-standing supporter of PENHA, with over two decades of collaboration on development and the environment. PENHA was very pleased to host the minister and maintain the regional spirit. The Ministry of Environment and Rural Development is PENHA-Somaliland’s line ministry, overseeing projects on range rehabilitation, Prosopis control and use, economic diversification and land tenure. Community participation and enterprise promotion are central themes.
PENHA Director Dr. Zeremariam Fre and Programme Development Manager Bereket Tsegay also participated in a workshop on “Environmental Stewardship of the Somali Horn”, organised by the Anglo-Somali Society and held at Oxford House in London on October 25th 2016. At the event, Minister Ismail outlined the major environmental challenges facing Somaliland and the measures taken by her ministry to address them. PENHA will remain an active supporter of these efforts.
