This month, representatives of the Tropenbos International network joined leaders, experts, and communities at Africa Climate Week and the Africa Climate Summit 2 in Addis Ababa.
Amsale Shibeshi and Prof. Mitiku Haile (from Pastoral and Environmental Network in the Horn of Africa (PENHA)), and Prof. Alphonse Maindo (from Tropenbos RD Congo) attended to highlight their key message:
➡️ Tropical forests are key to climate action in Africa – but solutions must be locally owned and community-driven.
🔹 PENHA emphasized inclusive value chains and climate finance that empowers communities rather than displace them.
🔹 Prof. Alphonse Maindo contrasted insights from community-led forest economies in the Congo and Amazon Basins, reminding us that different groups perceive development differently — and that top-down approaches risk fuelling conflict and deforestation.
Our call is for African solutions: innovative, locally-owned approaches that empower communities and strengthen local economies while helping to mitigate climate change and sustain the natural resource base on which everything depends.
