Prof. Mitiku Haile, PENHA Senior Advisor awarded the prestigious ‘2021 GCHERA World Agriculture Prize’

Prof. Mitiku Haile, PENHA Senior Advisor, Founding President of Mekelle University and Professor of Soil Science and Sustainable Land Management in the College of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mekelle University, Ethiopia has been awarded the prestigious World Agriculture Prize for 2021, by GCHERA (the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences), in recognition of his outstanding achievements in agriculture, life science education and scientific research (see announcement press release here).

The award ceremony took place on June 21, 2022 at Nanjing Agricultural University, China. Prof. Mitiku Haile delivered his acceptance speech virtually, and spoke on ‘Community Based Natural Resources Management and Conservation in Tigray: A Systematic Review of Intervention, Impacts and Challenges’. In his speech, he emphasised the value of the community-based approaches to drylands restoration and environmental management in interventions carried out over decades in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, generating knowledge and widely applicable practices in natural resources management, at the same time as enhancing climate change mitigation and poverty reduction policies.

Alongside Prof. Mitiku, Emeritus Professor Marc Van Montagu of Ghent University was also recognized as a GCHERA 2021 laureate.
